Encore is a great place to:
- Learn more about dancing, singing, playing your instrument, or technical theater
- Make new friends
- Travel to compete and perform at other schools
- Participate in our Encore Holiday Extravaganza and Showtime
- Get a PE Waiver for singer-dancers
- You CAN play a sport and be in other school activities while participating in Encore successfully! (Monday is our big mandatory rehearsal day for singers and pit band)
BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
Singers: Have you been preparing your one minute of an art song and Broadway song? If not, now is the time to start – talk with your voice teacher or check out the last page of the Handbook for song choices and practice recording links. Let Mr. Skidmore know if you need more help.
Take some time to review our Encore Handbook with your family. Encore has a history of high-level work, but this can only continue if we all commit to working together. This handbook contains important information about our policies, dates, and current fee structure. If you have questions, please ask a director BEFORE you audition.
AUDITION STEP 1:
Tell us about yourself:
Singer-dancer candidates, please complete this form as soon as possible. A vocal audition scheduling link will be sent to those who complete the form.
Pit-band candidates, please complete this form as soon as possible. We will send audition scheduling information to those who complete the form. Look for us to hold a round of auditions in May and a second round in the fall. We will let you know what you may need to prepare. Once you complete the form, you are set for now.
Encore Crew candidates, please complete this form as soon as possible. We will send interview scheduling information to those who complete the form. If you are auditioning as a singer/band member and awaiting the results of that audition before committing to the crew, please wait until after auditions to complete the form. We plan to have crew interviews after exams on May 27.
AUDITION STEP 2:
Practice! You can and should prepare your two vocal selections. The goal is for your 50-second (up to 1 minute) performance of each song to reflect your best singing. The dance audition will be taught to all candidates on Monday, the 19th (3-5pm). To prepare for the dance audition, consider doing some stretching and cardio activities from PE class or YouTube dance/exercise videos. While you cannot rehearse the actual dance audition material before the event, you can prepare your body and mind to be more successful.
Print (or pick up) this form and complete it before your audition! This is your permission form, so please bring it to the dance audition on May 19.
AUDITION STEP 3:
Sign up for a vocal audition time. Vocal auditions will be after the group dance audition on May 19. Information on how to sign up for your vocal audition time will be emailed one week before the audition date to everyone who filled out the Google Form in step 1.
Song selections for those without a voice instructor:
“Homeward Bound” (vs 1; end at m. 26) | Accompaniment (for learning) (the real thing) |
“A Whole New World” (first verse/chorus) | Accompaniment (folder link -school Gmail) |
AUDITION STEP 4:
Come to the dance audition in the choir room on Monday, May 19, from 3-5 pm. Be dressed comfortably and ready to move. Have fun meeting some of the other candidates. Do YOUR best – don’t worry or compare yourself to others.
Come to the vocal audition in the choir room on Monday, May 19, after the dance auditions. You will sign up for a time in step 3 above. Only the directors will see your vocal audition. Some students like to dress up for the vocal audition, but it isn’t required. We ask you to sing up to one minute of both your art song and Broadway song. It is optional, but if you have an accompaniment, feel free to bring it with a Bluetooth speaker to help make your audition as smooth as possible.
After auditions, take a moment to breathe and be proud of yourself. Results will be posted in the MHS choir trophy case when ready. Thank you for sharing with us. Thank you for your interest in Encore. We look forward to another great year!
